Getting the top grades

Students will need at least one A* A level to enter the University of Cambridge next year, the institution announced this week.

The A* is only becoming the grade first being available in the summer 2010 certification, many universities are now acknowledging the grade. Students will need at least one A* A level to enter the University of Cambridge this year, this type of university will set the trend that will see A* grades becoming more and more important. The higher grade will be introduced from 2010, but the National Council for Educational Excellence (NCEE) has recommended that universities ignore it for the first few years after its introduction because of concerns about its impact on widening participation.n

To get an A*, you must meet the following two requirements:

• 80% UMS average over the AS modules (Core Mathematics 1 , Core Mathematics 2, Mechanics 1)(i.e. the current requirements for an A).
• 90% UMS overall in the A2 units ( Core Mathematics 3, Core Mathematics 4, Mechanics 2).
